Healthy Eating, Active Communities is a four-year, $26 million program sponsored by The California Endowment. It aims to fight the growing childhood obesity epidemic in California and to develop state policy changes that will reduce the risk factors for diabetes and obesity.
Western Chula Vista is an area with high levels of poverty, ethnic diversity, and a large number of young children. Cross-border migration and bi-national/bilingual culture have a significant influence. By focusing on key sectors such as schools and after-school programs, neighborhoods, marketing, and health care... HEAC hopes to find new ways to address the growing obesity epidemic.
RecreationRx.org is proud to partner with HEAC Chula Vista through its health care sector in an effort to increase access to safe and structured activity for at-risk families. The goals of the HEAC health care sector are to:
- Train students participating in AHEC health career mentoring program on improving their nutritional or physical activity environment and will implement a project applying the concepts they learned in the training
- Work with Childhood Obesity Initiative and Diabetes Coalition to include a special page on obesity and diabetes treatment and prevention resources on the 211.org website
- Arrange for free or low-cost childhood obesity prevention and/or weight management programs to be offered in a community-based setting
