This study looked at what age period and intensity of physical activity are critical to lowering the incidence of premenopausal breast cancer.

Why is this study important?

As other studies have shown, leisure-time physical activity was associated with a reduced risk for premenopausal breast cancer in the women studied. Premenopausal women regularly engaging in high amounts of physical activity during both adolescence and adulthood may derive the most benefit. In fact, high levels of physical activity during ages 12-22 years contributed most strongly to the association. The strongest associations were for total leisure-time activity during participants' lifetimes rather than for any one intensity or age period.

Sustained physical activity with low to moderate intensity in childhood and adolescence will not only improve overall fitness and reduce obesity, but it will decrease a woman’s risk of certain types of cancer over her lifetime.

In short, Recreation is Medicine!

Maruti SS, et al "A prospective study of age-specific physical activity and premenopausal breast cancer" J Natl Cancer Inst 2008; DOI: 10.1093/jnci/djn135.

RecRx Receives California Medical Association Foundation (CMAF) Grant

RecreationRX.org has been awarded a Physicians for Healthy Communities Mini-Grant by the California Medical Association Foundation to support obesity prevention advocacy and outreach programs that enhance the well-being of California’s communities.
